Meta ads or Google ads: which should a local business run first?

Both can bring enquiries, but they work in opposite ways. The right one to start with comes down to one question: do people already search for what you sell?

Google ads catch people who are already looking

Your ad shows when someone searches for exactly what you do, like “modular kitchen Pune” or “dentist near me”. They’re looking right now, so the intent is high. You pay per click, and the price depends on how many other businesses want the same searches.

Meta ads reach people before they search

Facebook and Instagram show your ad to people you choose by location, age and interests. This works well for things people want once they see them: a new café, a gym offer, interior designs, an event.

A simple way to decide

  • People search for it: start with Google
  • People need to see it to want it: start with Meta
  • You’re new and nobody knows your name yet: Meta builds awareness, Google catches the demand

Most local businesses end up needing both.

Measure enquiries, not likes

Before you spend anything, set up tracking for calls, form fills and WhatsApp messages. Then compare both channels by cost per lead, and by how many of those leads became customers.

Start small, then move the money

Run both on a modest budget for two to four weeks, then shift spend to whichever brings cheaper, better leads. Boosting posts without a clear goal is usually the most expensive way to learn.
